Public services are in danger!

We are going to fight back!

The Harper Conservatives have decided to make the public sector pay for the financial crisis. The spending freeze announced in the 2010 federal budget will result in job and service cuts if we do not mobilize powerful and effective opposition on the ground. This is what our action plan is all about.

Mobilization against the Harper budget has begun in the region

Photo: members in the room Close to 120 members of locals in the National Capital Region were present on April 6 to begin the regional mobilization against the austerity measures announced in the last Conservative budget.

Members were able to exchange views on the best ways of protecting public services from the attacks by the Conservatives.  Patty Ducharme, PSAC’s National Executive Vice-President, indicated that while the government was announcing budget cutbacks to fight the deficit, it was giving major Canadian companies tax breaks totalling billions of dollars.  “It’s not up to the public to pay for a financial crisis triggered by the financial sector.”

Maria Fitzpatrick, the Regional Executive Vice-President of the NCR urged the members present to keep their eyes and ears open.  “We have to circulate information on position and service reductions and budget cutbacks to tell our membership and the public about the impact this budget has really had.”

Members were invited to use mobilization tools to determine what will actually happen in their workplaces when managers implement the new measures that flow from the budget.  The members requested that other meetings of this type be held to get the information out there and to tell the public about the looming threats to public services. Federal budget targets public service for cuts, PSAC will defend members, jobs, services

Even if pensions were not targeted by the government in its latest budget, the March 4 budget freezes federal departmental spending.  The government announced they want to balance the budget on the backs of public service workers – a direct threat to our jobs and the services we deliver.

La Presse (in French only) and Le Droit published on March 10 that SNC-Lavalin charges thousand of dollars for maintenance work that our members of the SV Group can do cheaper.

We need to fight against a reduction of the public services offered to all Canadians.

John Gordon seeks the support of opposition party leaders

The Throne Speech clearly spelled out the government's intentions - he is targeting our public services. John Gordon didn't wait for the reading of the federal budget and immediately communicated with the leaders of the three opposition parties.
